How to Prepare for Your Advising Appointment(s)

How to Prepare for Your Advising Appointment(s)

Your advising appointment can help you pick out your courses for the upcoming semester. Consult with your advisor and ask any questions regarding what classes they suggest you take based off of your chosen career path. Streamline your advising experience by following these tips:

  1. Go on course schedule planner. This website is where all of the courses that are being offered for the upcoming semester are posted.
  2. Look through the required courses for your major you have not taken yet. You can see a list of your major’s required courses as well as general education classes on Degree Navigator. If you’re an undecided major, browse the general education courses. Think about what interests you and see if there are any basic or introductory courses offered in those fields. (For example, Introduction to Painting, Introduction to Psychology, etc.).
  3. Decided how many credits you are taking. A usual work load is 15 credits. Think about what you can handle.
  4. Write down the courses you are interested in taking and when they are offered. Have a few extra options (second-choice, third-choice courses) in case things fill up or don’t work with your schedule.

If you follow these steps, your advising appointment should go smoothly! Make sure you have some questions prepared to ask your adviser. You only have 30 minutes for your appointment, so you want to utilize that time as best you can.
