Why I Chose Rutgers—Camden

Why I Chose Rutgers—Camden

Hi guys! I am LeAnne, and I am currently a junior majoring in Health Sciences here at Rutgers—Camden. I choose this major because at first, to be honest, I had no clue what I wanted to do. All I did know was the general direction I wanted to go: the medical field. Health Sciences is a good way for you to get your foot in the door. It provides students with a broad overview of medical careers such as physical and occupational therapy, health administration, or even a health educator. Personally, with my Health Sciences degree, I plan to go to a graduate school that offers a dual program in a Master’s in athletic training and a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. The most important decision I made along the way was the decision to go to Rutgers—Camden. Here’s a list of all the reasons why I choose to attend:

1. Small Community: I came from a very small town where my high school was one floor. Coming from this type of environment, I wanted a small close community, and Rutgers—Camden was it. The majority of the buildings are a 10-minute walk or less from the undergraduate living areas. When on campus the farthest building is about a 15-minute walk coming from the far end of the campus.

2. Safety: When hearing Camden, safety might not be the first thing to come to mind. However, this is one of the reasons why I choose this Rutgers campus. We have a bus that can transport students to all the campus buildings. We are also a blue light school which means that whenever you have an emergency you can go to a blue light pole and hit the button. Police respond very quickly and get to you as quickly as they can. Also, if students feel unsafe, they can call the police or security to ask them to walk them to wherever they need to go. There is also security personnel going around campus all day and night long.

3. Financial Aid: Rutgers—Camden has plenty of opportunities for students to have low tuition. They offer lots of scholarships as well as the amazing Bridging the Gap program. This program allows students that make under a certain amount of income to get the rest of their tuition paid for. This is also another reason why I choose Rutgers—Camden.

4. Location: Rutgers—Camden is located right in the center of the action. Students can take the PATCO over to Philadelphia which takes about 5 to 10 minutes. Also, the PATCO goes further into New Jersey where students can either go back home for the weekend or find something else to do. Students can go to NYC (3-hour trip) or take a 2.5-hour trip over to Washington DC. This is perfect for internship opportunities.
